An Unequally Yoked Relationship
65
"Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14)
Relationships don't go sour overnight, there are always inner knowings and telltale signs that are evident throughout the experience long before the final breaking point. When we determine to be true to ourselves in self honoring and loving ways, and listen to our inner spirit when warning signs come into our awareness, we will make better choices up front or be quicker to walk once we recognize that the person we're dating is not the best life choice. The following piece is another life experience during my college years.
Unequally Yoked
Although we confessed our love for one another,
there was a barrier between us
that grew out from within us.
We were a couple and yet we were not.
We had so much in common and yet were so different.
We shared our joys and sorrows and yet did not grow together.
Our relationship was stagnant.
You suppressed a positive inner spirit
that I sensed in your presence and
heard in your voice.
When we looked at one another, I saw it in your eyes.
When I observed you from a distance, I felt it in my heart.
I awkwardly tried to reach in, but didn’t know how to draw you out.
Our relationship was not working.
Things might have been different had I been stronger
and not yielded to you and disobeyed my Lord,
had I not compromised my salvation and made you my life.
I needed to put my God before you and always give Him first place.
I needed to be obedient to His word, in order that we might be saved.
I needed to trust His all knowing wisdom that He would work all things
together for our good.
Our relationship had to end.
